Your resume is an important marketing tool. It is used to convey effectively what you have to offer to the employer in the position you are targeting. Therefore, a good resume is a tailored resume. Also, it is accomplishment based and easy to understand. As a rule of thumb, use no more than one page per 10 years of working experience. Be aware that the average person reading your resume will spend only about 20 seconds scanning it, in order to decide if it is worth their time.
Accomplishments
An effective resume is a summary of the results you achieved in the positions you’ve held. Therefore, it is not simply a description of your job duties, nor does it need to include everything you have ever done. Instead, focus on the accomplishments that are relevant to your target audience. Below are some resources to help you to identify your accomplishments and format them into statements for your resume:
Formatting
Chronological Resume
Universally the most preferred format among employment professionals and hiring managers. It commonly has four main sections.
Technical Resume
This format is similar to the chronological resume, but adds “Technical Skills” as a major category. It is a useful format when applying for a job requiring specific technical knowledge and experience. Please note: If you have a technical background, but want to transition into a business career it is very important to remove all technical terms and lingo from your resume. Always keep your target audience in mind!
Executive Profile and Bios
Even though every professional should have a well written resume, you may also want to have an executive profile and/or a bio. If you are targeting top level positions and are doing a targeted mailing, you may want to create a one page Executive Profile. You may also need a Bio if you are planning to work as a consultant, write a business plan, or engage in public speaking.
